The Basque Country coastline along the north coast of Spain is becoming increasingly popular with travelling golfers looking for great golf courses, fantastic gastronomy, a wealth of heritage and some vibrant towns and cities to explore. There are 12 golf courses in the region with Pedrena being one of the highlights – a Harry Colt design made famous when a young Seve Ballesteros won the aged just 17. The Neguri and Meztegi courses around Bilbao and Basozabal and Real San Sebastain near the lovely city of San Sebastian are also not to be missed. Most of the golf courses are easily accessible to visiting golfers with good value green fees and their locations, close to the main coastal cities of Santander, Bilbao and San Sebastian, are ideal for a short golf break without too much travel.
A visit to this region is not complete without a visit to one of the famous Rioja vineyards and a traditional dinner in a cider house. A day off the golf course is recommended to discover the history and heritage of the cities and villages as well as a visit to the world famous Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. In this region, as well as the golf, you can enjoy the coastline, mountains, valleys and vineyards which are all in close proximity. The Basque country is one of Spain’s best kept secrets.
