Located between Irvine Bay and the railway on Ayrshire’s remarkable stretch of links coastline, lies the magnificent Western Gailes Golf Club. The club dates its history back to 1897 and offers the golfer a blend of the traditional and modern. The course is highly rated and is 35th in the Top 100 courses of the British Isles and has played host to a number of tournaments, including the final qualifying for the Open at Royal Troon and Turnberry and the Curtis Cup and eight Scottish Amateur Championships.
Western Gailes presents a fair challenge with very few “blind” shots. It makes good use of the natural contours of the land but the placement of its bunkers is severe and they will undoubtedly catch any wayward shots. Major hazards include the railway line to the east of the course, the beach to the west, three burns and a testing breeze off the Firth of Clyde. Any change in the direction or strength of the wind, that typically varies between south-westerly and north-westerly off the adjacent Firth of Clyde, provides new challenges that are compounded by the undulating terrain and finely contoured greens cleverly located and set in the folds of the surrounding sand dunes.
Together with the line of dunes running down the coastal stretch from the 5th to the 13th holes, the out of bounds wall from the 14th onwards, the plentiful supply of pot bunkers plus the meandering burns, all combine to present variety and a memorable challenge.
Easy to reach and even easier to explore, Ayrshire & Arran sits on the west coast of Scotland with its wonders of island life, countryside towns and sandy shores. This is the region that gave us the National Bard, Robert Burns. Explore the great Burns attractions, take a wander around an ancient castle, or learn about the Vikings who once set foot on these very shores.
Both Ayrshire and Arran produce a range of tasty treats that you won’t want to miss. Try the fresh seafood, caught daily off the shore, sit down to a main course of local lamb, beef or pork…Read More
