Overview
This was one of the centres of the great industrial revolution in the 19th century. Industries here included coalmining, today illustrated by the Yorkshire Mining Museum, and textiles, one of the centres of which was Halifax a few miles down the road. If you are with the family, take the children to visit the Eureka Museum, a sort of living compendium of science.
It might divert your attention from the many nearby golf courses, including the vary underrated Huddersfield course, where Sandy Herd learnt how to play well enough to win the British Open in 1902. He must have been fit, too, because this is a very hilly course. Also called Fixby, the layout is lined with trees and strategy is by no means simple as it is hard to judge the right distances and trajectories you need in order to find the optimum place for your drive so as to attack the greens, upgraded in 2004 by Cameron Sinclair. A classic layout where from the very first hole you understand that only the good shots get their just desserts.
