Of course, this is not the world’s greatest golf course, but how could anyone not marvel at this extraordinary location in a region that was a battleground for the Celts, the Scots, the English and the Vikings? At almost driving distance from the local St Michael’s Mount – Lindisfarne – standing in the shadow of the remains of a castle where the Kings of Northumbria were crowned, this course, or rather the 15th tee, provides a fabulous view over four different castles.
Connoisseurs might object to the fact that the layout follows every nook and cranny of the terrain and that it is just placed on top of land rather than worked into it, but it will delight today’s growing number of minimalist architectures. And while hardly a very strategic course, it is a most interesting challenge, at least when it comes to steering clear of verges, heather, gorse and tall grass dotted with wildflowers. Serious students of golf architecture will politely refrain from comment, while lovers of a course that sticks to its origin will be delighted.
