Overview
Essex is not really a golfing county like Surrey, for example, on the other side of London. But some of the courses here do stand out, including this one, laid out in 1920 over a former hunting estate. Thorndon Park features a gigantic neo-classical mansion, one that would surely serve as an impressive and characterful club house, although rather disappointingly the actual 19th hole is more modern and less imposing.
This is one of the hundreds of courses designed by Harry Colt and it is as intelligent in its layout, as imaginative in its use of the land and as fair and open as the others, with a few superb fairways amidst ancient oaks and other trees. When you realise how few technical resources they had at the time (1920), it makes you think how many modern designers could learn from this style of layout. Of course, like many British courses from another age, this one lacks length, but most players won’ complain.
Location
The South East region of England has some of the best golf courses in the country. After playing the renowned courses such as The Grove, Stoke Park, St Georges and Hanbury Manor, it is easy to see why the South East is incredibly popular with both groups looking to party and couples looking for a romantic break.
