Overview
The fantastic Aroeira golf resort is just 30 minutes from Lisbon and is one of the most popular golf resorts in the whole of Portugal. Close to the nearby coastal town of Caparica, Aroeira is a golf complex comprising of two championship golf courses, a host of apartments and villas, fantastic leisure facilities and a selection of impressive private palatial homes.
Aroeira I was designed in 1973 by Frank Pennink (most famously known for his design of Vilamoura Old Course on the Algarve) and was affectionately christened the ‘Wentworth of Lisbon’ by the UK press and it is easy to see why. Cut through thick pine forests, the course measures a lengthy 6,650 yards off the back tees and requires accurate shot making from the first shot to the last. The course was the venue for the Portuguese Open in 1996 and 1997, has played host to several Ladies’ European Tour events and, in 2013, the prestigious European Men’s Club Trophy.
The resort’s second course, unimaginatively named Aroeira II, opened in 2000 and was designed by renowned architect Donald Steel. It was felt the Aroeira Resort was lacking a modern layout that could live up to the developments in technology and therefore the second course was built to exacting European Tour standard recommendations. Aroeira II compliments its big brother well and visitors will enjoy the distinct tranquil and serene environment but will discover a course that possesses a few more thrills and spills along the way. At over 7,000 yards from the tips, Aroeira II is a much tougher and longer test with all the difficulties of the first course elevated and with water in play on no fewer than nine holes. Long, straight driving, accurate approach play and exact putting on the large, undulating greens is required to secure 36 points on this holiday course.
Location
The Costa Azul is Portugal’s hidden gem. For those in golfing circles will need no introduction into the quantity of high calibre golf courses in this region just south of Lisbon, with big-name designers having produced some of the best golf in Portugal.
