The Strathtyrum Course offers a relaxed and enjoyable introduction to golf at St Andrews Links, making it an excellent choice for mixed-handicap groups, improving golfers and those looking for a less demanding round in the famous Home of Golf. Opened in 1993, the course was created to complement the more challenging championship layouts found across St Andrews.
This 18-hole, par-69 links course measures approximately 5,620 yards and features wider fairways and a more manageable length than many of its famous neighbours. However, golfers should not assume that a good score is guaranteed. Although there are only 15 bunkers, they are cleverly positioned to catch inaccurate shots, while the large greens feature slopes and subtle borrows that can challenge even confident putters.
Accurate iron play is particularly important on the Strathtyrum. The course rewards golfers who find the correct areas of the fairways and greens rather than relying purely on distance from the tee. Its gentler layout and welcoming character make it ideal as an opening round before tackling the New, Jubilee or Old Course, while experienced players can still enjoy working on their approach play and short game.
The course’s position within the St Andrews Links complex makes it easy to combine with the Eden Course, practice facilities and other layouts during a longer Scotland golf holiday. It is also a strong option for societies and groups containing golfers with different abilities.
