Scotscraig Golfing Club is a wonderful addition to a Scottish golf holiday for anyone who enjoys traditional design and a course with a story behind it. Set in Tayport on the southern shore of the Firth of Tay, around 20 minutes from St Andrews, it combines the running turf and coastal breezes of links golf with the trees, heather and gorse of a classic heathland layout. Founded in 1817, it is one of Scotland's oldest golfing clubs, but the experience is anything but a history lesson.

The 18-hole, par-71 course measures around 6,550 yards from the white tees and rewards accuracy, imagination and sensible positioning. Its early layout was shaped by Davie Robertson, with later work from Old Tom Morris and James Braid. The signature par-four fourth, Westward Ho, is a particular highlight: the raised knoll green makes judging your approach a fascinating challenge. Firm greens, strategic bunkering and the ever-changing wind mean there's plenty to think about throughout the round.

Scotscraig has hosted Open Championship qualifying six times and the Scottish PGA Championship, giving it a serious golfing pedigree without losing its welcoming character. We particularly like the clubhouse experience, including the recently refurbished restaurant and the Playfair Trophy Room, where you can explore memorabilia from more than two centuries of golf. There's also a professional shop and a putting and warm-up area.
