Quinta do Lago has been at the forefront of European golf for a number of years and has recently been named ‘Europe’s Best Golf Venue’ at the World Golf Awards and won an ‘Editor’s Choice Award for Best International Resorts by Golf Digest’. Home to three award-winning courses – North, South and Laranjal, the resort boasts a wealth of cutting edge facilities including the world’s first Paul McGinley Golf Academy and the only TaylorMade Performance Centre in Europe.
The North Course at Quinta do Lago has five-star golf facilities. There is very little resemblance between the old layout which was one of the Algarve’s original courses and the totally revamped new course which re-opened its doors a few years ago. One of the most talked about golf projects in Europe, the course which was redesigned by American architect Beau Welling in close collaboration with European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, was rebuilt with €9.6m investment. The North Course has been redeveloped with the emphasis firmly on precision and strategy and golfers will be challenged by a combination of undulating greens, well-positioned bunkers and water hazards. All-in-all a fantastic golf course and one of Algarve’s best.
Quinta do Lago’s Laranjal golf course which opened in February 2009 is a well defined course that boasts the same high standards set by Quinta do Lago Algarve’s other two courses. Laranjal, originally an orange grove, is today a beautiful and totally different golf experience. It is a sanctuary for those seeking the finest in golf and personalised service. Its narrow fairways and well defined greens require concentration and accuracy to navigate this testing route laid out on a rolling and distinctive terrain. The course features five par 5s, five par 3s and eight par 4s and features five lakes combined with narrow fairways and tight greens.
Quinta do Lago South which was designed by William Mitchell, is often voted the visitor’s favourite of Quinta do Lago’s trio. It has recently reopened following a €7m Euro upgrade and is once again one of the best courses in Portugal. The 6,900 yard par 72 championship course, set in undulating hills and pine forest has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times and is a truly magnificent course. It has been ideally designed to test the low handicap golfer but it can also be enjoyed by the handicap golfer with the variety of tees. The signature hole is the stunning par 3 15th with a long carry over a large lake to a well-guarded green set amongst pine trees. The 8th, 10th and 18th are outstanding par 4s on this scenic course which is an enjoyable experience for golfers of all standards. The golf course was rated among the best in Portugal by Golf Digest Magazine.

Since the Penina Hotel was introduced to the locals of Portimao in 1966, the growth of golf along the Algarve coast has been incessant with many famed courses being built such as Quinta do Lago’s trio of courses, Vilamoura’s handful of top tracks, Pestana’s fantastic four around Alvor and more recently the two signature courses at Amendoeira.
