Overview
The original course was shared with the Lundin Golf Club. But when the railways arrived in the region, the course was split nine holes on one side and nine on the other, which each club created an extra nine holes. So instead of one good course, here we have two, as adjacent now as they were in the past.
Most of the holes at Leven are pure links style, but two or three are close to the heather-bound inland course that are so common in both Scotland and England. Here again the wind has a say in things, because Leven is distinctly vulnerable when played in fine weather by long-hitters and skilled technicians.
In this case even the least experienced players will have fun, the last few holes notwithstanding. The least they should do is avoid the deep fairway bunkers and the sand around the green, and stay focused until the very end, as the Scoonie Burn can scupper your round just as easily as the burn on the 18th hole at Carnoustie. This has always been one of the finest closing stretches in the game, one to conclude a great day’s golfing.
