Golf Old Course Cannes Mandelieu
Cannes
Golf Old Course Cannes Mandelieu is one of the most historic golfing destinations on the French Riviera, combining traditional course architecture with the relaxed elegance of the Côte d'Azur. Located in Mandelieu-la-Napoule, just west of Cannes, this celebrated venue occupies 74 hectares of beautiful Mediterranean countryside, shaded by approximately 4,000 umbrella pine trees. With its fascinating heritage, distinctive river crossing and convenient coastal location, Golf Old Course Cannes Mandelieu offers an experience unlike many modern French golf resorts. At Hashtag Golf Travel, we recommend this remarkable club for golfers seeking historic golf, Mediterranean sunshine and the opportunity to explore southern France.
Founded in 1891 by Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia, the club is recognised as the oldest golf course on the Côte d'Azur and among the oldest in France. Its development was influenced by celebrated golf architect Harry Shapland Colt, whose approach to natural landscapes and strategic design helped shape its golfing character. Originally established with nine holes, the venue gradually evolved into the impressive golfing destination enjoyed today.
The principal Old Course features 18 holes, playing to a par of 71 and measuring approximately 5,749 metres. Unlike the dramatic hillside courses found elsewhere along the Riviera, the layout occupies relatively flat terrain, with fairways winding between magnificent century-old umbrella pines, eucalyptus trees and colourful Mediterranean vegetation.
Although the course is not excessively long, accuracy and thoughtful course management are essential. Mature trees influence driving lines, strategically positioned bunkers protect approaches and subtly contoured greens reward precise iron play. Coastal breezes from the Mediterranean introduce another challenge, ensuring that golfers must adapt their strategy as conditions change.
Perhaps the course's most memorable feature is its extraordinary river crossing. Golfers travel across the River Siagne aboard a small ferry during their round, passing between different sections of the course. This unusual tradition adds a wonderful sense of adventure and makes the Old Course one of the French Riviera's most distinctive golfing experiences.
Beyond the championship layout, the club offers the historic nine-hole Grand Duc Course, a shorter par-33 layout particularly suited to beginners and golfers seeking a relaxed round. The Petit Prince nine-hole pitch-and-putt course provides further opportunities to practise approach shots and develop short-game skills.
The Old Course Academy features covered driving range bays, dedicated short-game areas and professional coaching supported by TrackMan technology. These facilities make the club an attractive option for golfers interested in combining a holiday with professional tuition.
After completing a round, the beautiful Norman-style clubhouse provides an inviting setting beneath the pine trees. Restaurant 1891 serves seasonal French cuisine, with an attractive terrace overlooking the eighteenth fairway, while La Grange bar offers refreshments in a relaxed atmosphere.
The club's location also provides excellent opportunities to explore Cannes, the beaches of Mandelieu-la-Napoule and the spectacular Estérel coastline. Golfers planning additional rounds can include nearby Riviera Golf de Barbossi, offering a contrasting experience in the hills above Mandelieu.
At Hashtag Golf Travel, we believe Golf Old Course Cannes Mandelieu is a wonderful addition to a French Riviera golf holiday. Its remarkable history, memorable river crossing and traditional course design offer something genuinely different. Our Golf Travel Experts can arrange a tailor-made Cannes golf holiday, combining preferred tee times with carefully selected accommodation and additional rounds along the beautiful Côte d'Azur.

About The Area
Monte-Carlo is a brilliant choice for golfers who want a luxury golf holiday with Riviera glamour, sea views and a proper sense of occasion. It is not a typical golf resort base, and that is part of the appeal. Here, your trip can mix high-altitude golf, Mediterranean dining, harbour walks, designer shopping, casino evenings and easy exploring along the Côte d’Azur.
The main golfing highlight is Monte-Carlo Golf Club, set on Route du Mont-Agel in La Turbie. The club sits around 850 metres above sea level and offers 18 holes in a spectacular position above the coast, with green fairways, mountain scenery and wide Côte d’Azur views. The course is described by the club as undulating and technical, stretching across the foothills of the Mont Agel massif, with standout views from the 13th tee towards Monte-Carlo, Italy, Corsica and the Riviera.
Away from the fairways, Monte-Carlo is made for memorable after-golf moments. You can visit the Casino de Monte-Carlo, stroll around Port Hercule, explore old Monaco, enjoy gourmet restaurants, visit the Oceanographic Museum or relax by the coast at Larvotto.
For UK golfers, Monte-Carlo works beautifully as part of a tailor-made South of France golf holiday, especially when combined with Nice, Cannes, Mougins or the wider French Riviera. Hashtag Golf Travel can help plan the right hotels, tee times, transfers and Côte d’Azur add-ons.
